McLellan, 17, was driving home after attending a school fundraiser.
Drew Carder, 17, was a passenger in the car, but only sustained minor injuries. Carder, who was a close friend and football teammate of McLellan’s, was one of several classmates, family members and friends who spoke Sunday during the candlelight vigil at the Louisburg High School stadium. Carder is the son of Doug Carder, Herald senior writer.
McLellan, who was a senior quarterback at Louisburg High School, died from injuries in the crash north of West 271st Street and Metcalf Road, which was reported at 8:43 p.m. Saturday, according to the Miami County Sheriff’s Office. McLellan was driving a 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse southbound on Metcalf Road and attempted to pass a vehicle before leaving the roadway. The car flipped and struck a utility pole, ejecting McLellan.
McLellan was taken to St. Luke’s Medical Center in Kansas City where he later died about 1 a.m. Sunday. Carder was treated at Overland Park Regional Medical Center and was released late Saturday night.
A funeral service for the teen is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday at Wildcat Stadium in Louisburg.
