Mark Vanderweide, 33, Olathe, was headed southbound on I-35 at about 8 p.m. Friday when he was struck by a “random gunshot” near the Edgerton Road exit, south of the new interchange being built to service the Kansas City Logistics intermodal rail hub.
Vanderweide was taken to Overland Park Regional Medical Center, reportedly with a lower leg injury, according to media reports. An adult passenger and three children in the Dodge Grand Caravan were not hurt during the shooting, according to the Miami County Sheriff’s Office.
The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and Kansas Highway Patrol assisted with the scene Friday night, but the case now is under investigation by the Miami County Sheriff’s Office and the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.
Wayne Minckley, Miami County undersheriff, said investigators still are searching for the person or persons responsible and have a general idea of where the shot or shots originated.
“There’s a few residences so we have a general idea [of where the shots came from],” Minckley said. “We’re treating it as a crime until we know different.”
The shooting has been classified as an intentional shooting, according to the office.
Anyone with information is urged to call the Miami County Sheriff’s Office at (913) 294-3232 or Crime Stoppers at (913) 294-8477.
