A 2012 GMC van driven by Michael Thuro, Ottawa, was northbound on I-35 about 7 a.m. near the I-35 and Antioch Road interchange in Merriam when the van struck the back of a 2009 Honda driven by Mark Friel, 41, Olathe, who had slowed for congested traffic, according to a Kanas Highway Patrol report. The force of the collision pushed the Honda into the back of a 1998 Chevrolet Blazer driven by Melissa Malcom, 45, Olathe, according to the KHP report.
Friel was transported by ambulance to the University of Kansas Medical Center with undisclosed injuries, the report said. The report listed Thuro as having possible minor injuries, but he did not require transport to a hospital, according to the report. Malcom was not injured, the report said.
All three drivers were wearing seat belts, the report said.
