Renoud, who has been with the school district for 44 years, recently announced to his staff his plans to resign at the end of the school year.
“There wasn’t one of those defining moments,” Renoud said. “It was kind of a process this fall when school started that things just weren’t the same. I still love my job. I still love the kids. I still love coming to work, and I guess that is a good time to quit when you still love to do all that. I found that the energy that I think the job should take wasn’t the amount of energy that I either was willing to spend or didn’t have. I don’t know which. If I can’t do the job 100 percent, I’m not going to do it.”
Renoud has fulfilled 33 years as a school administrator in his career, and 11 as a teacher in the classroom. He has been the school’s principal for the past 12 years after originally planning on only being in the position for one year when he filled it on an interim basis.
“I retired in 2002. When I came over [to the elementary school], it was for a one-year interim position,” Renoud said. “At the end of that year, I said, ‘I will stay and do this if you want me to.’ So I did.”
Leaving while he was at the top of his game was a big part of his decision, Renoud said.
“One would prefer to go when people still want you to stay, which hopefully is still somewhat the case, and go when you still love your job, which I do,” he said. “I don’t want to get to the point where I don’t want to come to work. The 5 o’clock alarm at some point is going to get tiring, and I am usually [at the school] by 6 a.m.”
The experience in Wellsville has been great, Renoud said.
Upon his resignation at the end of the school year, Renoud said he plans to keep busy and run for office, though he said he does not want to give away what position he’ll be seeking just yet.
“I had already decided a year ago that I am going to run for an office next spring,” he said. “I am going to be filing in January for a political office to run for.
“I’ve also sold Crown Real Estate for 15 years and will continue to do that,” he said. “There are also some other options that I am looking at.”
Jerry Henn, Wellsville school district superintendant, said the district’s plan is to have a new principal hired by spring break.
“We are looking to open [the position] up in January,” Henn said. “It will be around mid-February when we will start doing interviews.”
