The Lady Braves (13-6-2) play at No. 9 Cumberland, Tenn (15-3-1) 1 p.m. Saturday in the opening round of the NAIA Tournament at Lebannon, Tenn.
Ottawa previously qualified for nationals in 2009 and 2011. Ottawa is 0-2 in the national tourney.
The Lady Braves needed penalty kicks to get past Kansas Wesleyan Saturday in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference championship match in Topeka. Ottawa won 7-6 after the teams played to a 1-1 tie through regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods.
The first six penalty kick from both teams connected. On Kansas Wesleyan’s seventh shooter, Ottawa keeper Samantha Gitmed made the save.
Ottawa’s Lauren Whitney then stepped up and put the ball past the Wesleyan keeper to give Ottawa the victory.
Ottawa scored just five minutes into the match. Morgan Trupp lofted a high kick over the keeper’s head for the goal. Wesleyan tied it late in the match.
Ottawa topped Bethany, 2-0, Friday in the KCAC semifinals. The shutout is Ottawa’s 13th for the season.
