The West Franklin girls won their sub-state semi-finals match 55-51 Friday night against Jayhawk-Linn in Wellsville. They will go on to play Council Grove in the sub-state championship at 6 p.m. today in Wellsville.
“The game was awesome,” Conley, head coach for West Franklin, said. “It was very fast, very quick. Up and down.”
By the end of the first quarter, West Franklin led by two, 16-14, but halftime brought Jayhawk-Linn within a point at 26-25. In the third quarter, Jayhawk-Linn battled back to gain a three-point lead, 44-41.
But in the end, the Falcons pushed ahead, outscoring Jayhawk-Linn by six points in the last quarter.
“I love my girls,” Conley said. “We just played so stinking hard. I was just so impressed with how much heart they played with.”

WELLSVILLE — A strong second-half spurt by Council Grove put a semi-final win out of reach for the Lady Eagles Friday night. Wellsville fell 55-32 in the semi-final round of sub-state at home.
“I think we played pretty well in the first half,” Brock Campbell, Wellsville head coach, said. “[Council Grove] hit some outside shots, and in the second half we just couldn’t hang with them defensively. They are definitely a good team, that is for sure.”
Moriah Kayhill led Wellsville with 11 points, eight of which came in the first half.
“It ended up being [Kayhill’s] last night,” Campbell said. “She hit a couple of three-point baskets that kept us in the game in the first half.”
While the season is over for the Lady Eagles, Campbell said his team showed a lot of fight.
“We’ve made some steps in the right direction and are building a good program here,” he said.
