The Cyclones battered St. James for 30 runs in the doubleheader. Ottawa won 9-1 and 21-11.
“The hitting for us really came alive,” Ottawa coach Joe Serna said. “If our hitters will take a focused approach at the plate and wait for their pitch, we can hit with anyone around.”
The defense and pitching also made a difference. Elizabeth Seimears mowed down St. James in the opener. She tossed a two-hitter.
“Elizabeth Seimers put on a stellar performance and had good control of her pitches all game,” Serna said. “The defense was solid behind her and the girls’ hitting came alive like it did against De Soto in the second game. Coach JR Daugherthy and I were very proud of their enthusiasm and focus throughout the whole game. It was a total team effort.”
The second game turned into an offensive battle with both teams hitting the ball hard.
Serna said Seimears got tired and left the ball up and St. James took advantage for an early 5-0 lead.
“Kendall Blanco came on and fought a tough strike zone all night, but battled and kept competing like she knows how to,” Serna said. “The hitting was seen on both sides, which was good for us, because it made our defense have to concentrate and step up to make plays, in which they did.”
Ottawa (4-5) had Friday’s doubleheader rained out and it will be played Thursday at home against Eudora. The Cyclones play 4:30 p.m. Monday at home against Spring Hill.
Ottawa plays Tuesday at Louisburg. Ottawa finishes the week with three games Saturday in the Turner Invitational. Ottawa closes the regular season May 7 at home against undefeated Paola.
“Going to be an exciting ending to the regular season for the Cyclones,” Serna said.
