“The first time we played them we were out-matched, and they came to play,” Shawn Herrmann, Ottawa Legion AA head coach, said. “We had opportunities to score and win both games on Tuesday, and we just didn’t get them in.”
Iola’s Jared Latta and Aaron Barclay scored both RBI’s for Iola in the first game. Ottawa’s only run came on an RBI by Conner Stepp, sophomore shortstop.
“Conner is our lead-off hitter, and he was there to get a big hit for us,” Herrmann said.
Nathan Roth, junior pitcher, pitched the first game for Ottawa. Herrmann said Roth pitched very well against the defending state champs.
“He only gave up two runs against the defending state champions,” he said. “That’s pretty good.”
Ottawa took the early lead in the second game. It wasn’t until Iola’s lead off hitter Levi Ashmore hit a two RBI triple in the bottom of the sixth that Iola took the lead for good. Tate Jung, sophomore right fielder, had two of Ottawa’s four RBIs, one off of a single in the top of the first, and the other in the top of the third.
Herrmann said the players are eager to return home for today’s game against Fort Scott after the losses.
Ottawa Legion AA was set to play Fort Scott at 6 p.m. today at the Orlis Cox Sports Complex, Ottawa.
