Jeannin was announced as the new head varsity volleyball coach at Ottawa High School in May after previously coaching at the junior varsity level at OHS. She takes over a program of high expectations previously led by head coach Kendra Oberzan.
“Really before I took over the program, the expectations have been high,” Jeannin said. “I am really hoping to carry out that tradition.”
She takes over a team that was 12-15 overall last season and 11-7 in district play. Jeannin, who also teaches second grade at Eugene Field Elementary School, 720 Tremont Ave., Ottawa, said the team returns three varsity players after losing many from the previous year.
“We graduated a lot of seniors, which is always a challenge,” Jeannin said. “We should have some good leadership. We are bringing in some players who have been solid players at the JV level.”
The returning varsity players include Brianna Yates, senior setter, Brette Moore, junior right side hitter, and Kylie Foster, junior middle hitter. Jeannin said the team has worked diligently over the summer to prepare for the coming season.
“We did a lot of conditioning and weightlifting this summer,” Jeannin said. “We also went to some summer leagues and camps. I hope that the hard work carries over into the season.”
The season begins with a triangular game 4:30 p.m. Sept. 5 at OHS against Basehor-Linwood and St. Mary’s.
