Having coached the girls golf team at West Franklin High School since the program began, she said this season’s squad could be the one to make it to the state tournament.
“We have never gone to state as a team,” McGonigle said. “With the players we have, I really believe we can do that.”
The team consists of nine players this year including six returners. Of those six, seniors Courtney Renfro and Karlie Snethen return after both individually qualifying for state last season. Renfro has been to state twice in her high school career at West Franklin. Last year was Snethen’s first time competing in the top-level tournament.
Brianna Schreiber is the only other returning senior with experience. Juniors Stasha Curtis and Raylyn Bollin, along with sophomore Jessica Carlson, round out the returners from last year’s team.
“(Stasha) almost made it to state last year and (Raylyn) played in the regular season last year,” McGonigle said. “We only graduated one senior from last season.”
The Falcons also welcome three newcomers to the team in Sydnie Rackman, senior, Bailey Corwine, junior, and Amanda Ball, sophomore. McGonigle said no freshmen are on the current roster.
The first girls golf tournament for West Franklin is scheduled for 8 a.m. Aug. 28 at the Alvamar Golf Course, 1809 Crossgate Drive, Lawrence.
The team is currently practicing at Lamont Hill in Vassar.
