It was the first time in school history the boys fielded a full team at league. The Falcons did not perform like rookies.
West Franklin placed four in the top 13 to claim the Flint Hills League championship. Cody Webb was the league individual champion. Another first for West Franklin.
The West Franklin girls finished second and had had three runners in the top 13.
Falcons coach Tara Huggard said to win league in the boys’ first attempt made it a special. She said Webb’s historic win came because of hard work.
Bryan Ward was ninth followed by Jerrid Ryan (12th) and Dillon Douglas (13th).
“I couldn’t have been more excited for him,” Huggard said of Webb. “His hard work and dedication is definitely starting to pay off.
“Bryan Ward ran an amazing race. As a senior, he will be greatly missed next year and it was great to watch him earn all-league.
Autumn Holloway paced the girls in ninth. Alexis Yelland took 11th and Megan Ecord was 13th.
“The girls team also ran a great race,” Huggard said. “Autumn, Alexis and Megan have been running great as a pack this entire year so it was fun to see all three of them get all-league honors. The girls should be very proud of their second-place finish.
“Overall an amazing race and can’t wait to take the energy from it and see what they can do at regionals next week.”
West Franklin competes Saturday at the 3A regional in Burlington.
