Hillsboro and Silver Lake were the eventual state champions and third-place finishers.
Wellsville lost its pool matches to both teams, but did defeat Southeast of Saline to finish 1-2.
“What a great year for the Lady Eagles,” Wellsville coach Eric Evans said. “Even though we didn’t end up playing through to Saturday like we wanted to, I thought the girls represented their school well and played as hard as they could. This team showed a lot of competitiveness against the best the state has to offer, which speaks volumes for their toughness.”
Wellsville finished the season on a roll, going 15-4. The Eagles won the sub-state and Anderson County tourney titles entering state play for the second straight season.
The Eagles lost to Hillsboro (25-13, 25-21), topped SE Cherokee (15-25, 25-18, 25-13) and fell to Silver Lake (25-10, 25-14) in pool play.
Sophomore Ashley Sparks was selected to the all-tournament team after averaging 10 kills and 10 digs per match.
“The end of the season also means (as it does every year) the end of some high school volleyball careers … so thank you to Emily Strawn, Kaylee Myers, Erica McTaggart, Morgan Cunningham, and Darcy Bonzo, our seniors this year,” Evans said. “They will be missed.
“They were fantastically loud and spirited throughout the day,” he said.
Wellsville finished with a 26-17 record.
Ashley Sparks: 31 kills, 31 digs, 100 percent serving.
Erica McTaggart: 23 kills, 26 digs.
Emily Newhouse: 100 percent serving with 3 aces.
