The Lady Braves advanced to the KCAC Tournament championship match eight of the past 10 years, including winning the title five times.
Ottawa’s string of four straight KCAC championship tourney appearances was snapped Tuesday in a 2-1 upset by Southwestern at Peoples Bank Field.
Sixth-seeded Southwestern, was coming off an upset over No. 3 seed McPherson, scored the winning goal at the 84:03 mark of the 90-minute match.
After a scoreless first half, the Moundbuilders took a 1-0 lead on the Lady Braves in the 52nd minute. Sierra Meyer headed the ball in off of a corner kick by Kaci Hutchinson.
Ottawa tied the game in the 70th minute on a goal by Caitlin Parise from three feet out.
The winner was Meyer’s second goal of the match. She headed a long pass from Courtney Hornback into the net.
It was even in shots 12-12 but Ottawa had a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal. Ottawa goalkeeper Erin Stengle had two saves. Stengle had nine shutouts this season.
