A unique fundraiser in Wellsville raised close to $2,000 for an organization that provides help for youth.

The Student Support Services organization “flocked” yards in Wellsville. For donations of anywhere from $20 to $100, individuals could send a flock of pink flamingos to another yard.

“This is the first time we have done this and it has gone over very well,” Student Support Services board member Ronna Overton said. “Honestly we thought we will just start with a few this year and get our name out there. Our goal was to get our name out there and let people know we are here to help students in the community. We are hoping to bring it back again next year in the spring.”

One of the biggest services provided by the organization, which started in 2009, is the backsnack program that provides food for students in the Wellsville school district. Overman said the funds raised help supplement the food that is donated by Harvesters.

Overman said the amount raised will be almost enough to get them through next year.

“That was our goal,” she said. “To make sure we have enough so that if someone is in need, we will be able to help them out.”
