The Newton High School baseball team suffered a pair of losses Tuesday to Salina Central to open Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I play at Klein-Scott Field.

Newton lost the first game 17-3 and the second game 15-1. Both games ended in six innings on the 10-run rule.

In the first game, Newton trailed 6-3 after five innings, but gave up 11 runs in the top of the sixth. Newton was outhit 17-5.

Central’s Ethan Kickhaefer went three for four hitting with a home run and four RBIs. Brogan Richardson went four for five with three RBIs. Zach Farmer went three for five with two RBIs. Dawson Manning also drove in two runs. Five other players each drove in a run.

Sport Tegethoff went two for two for Newton with two RBIs. Jace Maxwell also drove in a run.

Ethan Speer threw 4.2 innings for Central for the win, striking out seven. Jeff Hermstock finished the game.

Newton used four pitchers with starter Matt Eldridge taking the loss.

In the second game, Central scored four runs in the first inning. Newton came back with a run in the third. The Mustangs put things away with five runs in the fourth, a run in the fifth and five runs in the sixth.

Kickhaefer went two for three, both home runs, driving in six runs. Ryan Dix went two for four with a home run and two RBIs. Farmer was three for five with two RBIs. Richardson ws two for four with two RBIs.

Christian Malcolm went two for two for Newton. Bryan Cusick drove in Newton’s run.

Kickhaefer went five innings on the mound for the Mustangs, striking out nine. Ryan Sanborn struck out three batters in the sixth.

Newton used five pitchers with Warren Dietz taking the loss. Dietz struck out four. Alex Kern struck out three.

Newton is 2-4 and plays at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Abilene in a weather-related make-up game.
