Police arrested a Hutchinson man Saturday night for firing a handgun out a window of his home and piercing the wall of his neighbor’s house where a mother and three juveniles were inside.

The neighbor, Ivy Newton, 31, called police about 8:40 p.m. to report her neighbor, James Wharton, 65, of 714 E. Sixth Ave., had been drinking and fired several shots from a handgun out of a window of his house toward her home.

At least one bullet passed through the house and struck an interior wall, the report stated.

When officers went to Wharton’s home, he refused to answer the door and told officers to F-off, according to the report.

The officers forced entry and took Wharton into custody. Wharton was booked on suspicion of criminal use of a firearm, felony interference and criminal damage to property. He later bonded out of jail.
