Senior Knights

SALINA — The Newton Post 2 Senior Knights American Legion baseball team finished 1-1 in bracket play of the 28th Kansas Grand Slam Baseball Tournament in Salina.

In the quarterfinals, Newton edged Lawrence Next Level 12-10. In the semifinals, Newton fell to the Salina Falcons 13-3. Salina topped Millard (Neb.) North 2-0 in the championship game.

Stats and scoring against Lawrence were not received.

Against Salina, the game was called after four innings on the 10-run rule. Salina scored in every inning. Newton scored all three runs in the second inning.

Richard Davis threw a complete game for Salina, allowing two earned runs on eight hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Christian Malcolm took the loss for Newton, allowing three earned runs on four hits with four walks. Sport Tegethoff allowed five runs on nine hits.

Ben Driver went three for three hitting for Salina, scoring two runs and driving in three. Carson Long went two for two with two RBIs. Brady McAfee drove in two runs. Brogen Richardson went two for three with an RBI. Zach Farmer went two for four with an RBI. Ryan Dix also drove in a run.

For Newton, Hunter Mapes went two for three with an RBI. Ian Akers also drove in a run. Kaden Davis and Matt Seirer each went two for two hitting.

Newton hosts Salina at 6 p.m. today at Klein-Scott Field.

Area softball

players compete

STILLWATER, Okla. — Newton softball players Mallory Seirer and Toria Thaw competed for the Tulsa Elite 316 Prospects 14U softball team during the weekend in a Stillwater.

The team finished 5-2.

In their first game, the Elite downed Texas Glory 03 Ark 6-2. The Elite downed OK A’s 14U Cronic 11-6. Thaw went one for two with an RBI. Seirer also finished one for two.

The Elite followed with a second win over the OK A’s 14U Cronic 6-1. Seirer went one for two with two RBIs. Thaw also went one for two.

The Elite fell to Top Gun Berry 14 14-9. Thaw went two for three with two RBIs. Seirer went one for three.

The Elite downed the TX Blaze NXT PLAT 14U 9-0. Seirer went one for two with an RBI.

The Elite downed the Tulsa Elite 2023 Galvan 4-1. In their tourney finale, the Elite fell to the Texas Glory ICT Way 8-5. Seirer went one for three.

The Elite is 21-14-3.

Heat team

finishes 2-2

The G2 Heat 18U Henderson finished weekend tournament play 2-2.

The Heat opened with a 12-2 win over Diamond Club. Aubrey Stevenson went three for three with three RBIs. C.J. Garcia drove in two runs. Aleah Urban went three for three. Alivia Lang went two for two. Jenna Henderson pitched the win, striking out five.

The Heat lost to the Aftershock 6-5. Mackenzie Koehn went two for two with an RBI. Lange, Stevenson and Kaylee Scott each drove in a run. Audrey Freeman took the loss. Henderson struck out three in three innings.

The Heat beat the AFA 16 Black 7-0. Henderson threw a one-hit shutout, striking out eight and walking one. Urban drove in two runs. Lange went two for two with an RBI. Freeman and Shalley Clark each added an RBI.

The Heat finished play with a 7-5 loss to the Rebels. Kyleigh Poss drove in two runs. Stevenson took the loss. Henderson struck out seven in 4 2-3 innings.

The Heat is 20-17-1.

Railers 10U

finishes 3-0

The Newton Railers 10U baseball team finished 3-0 in recent play.

The Railers beat the Hutchinson Hawks 6-3, the Hutchinson Hawks again 12-0 and the Halstead Fire 6-4.

The Railers are 4-1.

Wichita falls

in 12 innings

WICHITA — Maikol Gonzalez hit a two-run double with one out in the top of the 12th inning to lift the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks to a 5-3 win over the Wichita Wingnuts Monday night in American Association play at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium in Wichita.

The game needed about 4 1/2 hours to play. The attendance of 4,064 was one of the top turnouts for Wichita this season.

Fargo scored in the second inning on a wild pitch. Tony Thomas answered in the bottom of the second on a solo home run.

Charlie Valerio hit an RBI single in the sixth inning for Fargo. Another run scored on an error.

Wichita tied the game in the bottom of the ninth on a Zach Nehrir RBI single and an Abel Nieves sacrifice fly.

Gonzalez finished the game three for six hitting. Devan Ahart went three for four.

Nehrir, Nieves and John Nester each went two for five hitting for Wichita.

Fargo used seven pitchers with Benji Waite (2-2) getting the win. Waite went three innings, giving up two hits with three strikeouts. Wichita used five pitchers. Brady Bowen (1-1) pitched the 12th for the loss.

Fargo-Moorhead is 26-22. Wichita is 29-19. The two teams meet again at 7:05 p.m. today at Lawrence-Dumont.
