With both pitching staffs depleted after tournament play last week, the Newton Post 2 American Legion Senior Knights and Salina Falcons decided to play just one nine-inning game Tuesday in the Knights’ regular-season final at Klein-Scott Field.

After six innings and a 10-1 Salina lead, the two teams decided to call it a night.

“It took us a while to settle in,” Newton manager Evan Gilbert said. “We went pretty deep in the tournament and didn’t have a lot of arms. I knew we were going to have to get a few innings from Camden (Fenwick), but his arm was hurting tonight. Bryan (Cusick) shut them down in the middle innings, which was nice to see.”

Salina led 5-0 after two innings. Ethan Kickhaefer and Brayden Pavey each drove in two runs for the Falcons. Zach Farmer drove in a run in the third inning. Pavey hit a two-run single in the fourth.

Henry Claassen put Newton on the board with an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth.

Salina scored a pair of runs in the sixth on a Farmer single and a wild pitch.

Cade Sterrett threw four innings for the win, allowing a run, two hits, three walks and five strikeouts. Newton starter Camden Fenwick went 1 1-3 innings in the loss.

Pavey finished three for four at the plate with four RBIs. Cason Long, Kickhaefer and Farmer each had two hits for Salina.

Newton opens Class AAA zone play Sunday at Klein-Scott Field. Pairings will be set today. Nickerson, the Wichita Aviators and Hutchinson will also play in Newton’s zone with the top two teams advancing to state.

“We have some things to work out, but we got a couple wins in our tournament last week,” Gilbert said. “Hopefully, we can ride that wave and play hungry. We didn’t play Nickerson this year. We played Wichita early, but didn’t have all our guys there. They are a good solid team. They can hit the ball. They can pitch the ball a little bit. We have to go out, throw strikes and command the zone. If we play the kind of baseball we should, we should be OK. Hopefully, we’ll play hungry.”

JUNIOR KNIGHTS — The Newton Junior Knights fell to El Dorado 9-5 Tuesday in the opening game of Class A zone play in Buhler.

Scoring details were not reported.

Newton plays at 6 p.m. today in an elimination game.
