Hutchinson Community College sophomore Jaylen Erwin earned Jayhawk Conference Special Teams Player of the Week honors, after returning a punt for a touchdown Saturday against No. 2 Iowa Western.

The return by the sophomore from Charlotte, North Carolina, came with the Blue Dragons trailing by 24 points late in the third quarter.

While the rally fell short, as No. 11 Hutchinson fell to Iowa Western 33-24, it probably wouldn’t have gotten that close without Erwin.

With just 6 seconds remaining in the third quarter, the Blue Dragons trailed the Reivers 31-7. Erwin returned a punt 74 yards for a score to start a run of 17-unanswered points by Hutchinson, which made it a one-possession game.

Erwin averaged 33.5 yards per return on Saturday and had one kickoff return for 26 yards. He also had three receptions for 61 yards.

Erwin now has three touchdowns this season. Those touchdowns have come from an average of 53 yards per scoring play.
