Swathers claim

LINDSBORG — The Hesston High School volleyball team claimed a share of the Central Kansas League titles after a split Tuesday in Lindsborg.

Hesston fell to Pratt 25-17, 25-22; and came back to down Smoky Valley 25-23, 25-17. Pratt topped Smoky Valley 18-25, 25-18, 25-15.

Hesston is 24-5, while Pratt is 28-4 and Smoky Valley is 13-17. Hesston, Nickerson and Pratt all finish league play 8-1 and will share the league title.

“It was a struggle all night to find the energy and intensity that we had last weekend,” Hesston coach Jason Peters said. “We had our moments at times against Pratt, but made too many serving and hitting errors that prevented us from capitalizing on any momentum we were able to get. It was disappointing that we weren’t able to have a strong performance against them that would have given us a chance to win the league title outright.

“We were able come back against Smoky Valley with improved energy and played better overall, but we need to find a way to pick ourselves up quicker when things aren’t going our way. We will get several more chances to figure it out with a tough matchup on Thursday at Maize South, and then a strong tournament at Clearwater on Saturday.”

Hesston plays at Maize South at 6 p.m. Thursday. The Mustangs are ranked eighth in the Class 5A coaches poll.
