Maressah Milum wrote on her Facebook page Friday that she “can't wait to get acquainted with Graber Elementary!”
The Hutchinson USD 308 Board of Education Monday night approved the hiring, effective Dec. 3, of Milum to teach fourth grade at Graber. USD 308 Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources Rick Kraus hopes the district can hire more first-year teachers at the mid-semester mark.
“We’re still short, we’re still looking,” Kraus said. Milum has attended McPherson College. Another McPherson College student and a Sterling College student, both slated to graduate in December, could wind up in Hutchinson, also.
Hutchinson began the school year with some long-term substitute teachers in place. Some of them will remain in place for the duration of 2018-19, with Kraus saying it's better to keep them for the year.
Among other business Monday night, the school board:
-Met in closed session for the preliminary discussion of the acquisition of real property. Board President Kail Denison did not reveal whether the real estate was vacant land or a building. No action was taken.
-Approved the expenditure of $26,061 for weight equipment for Hutchinson High School.
-Approved the purchase of web cameras for the district, costing $30,982.
-Agreed to an auto insurance coverage package with Fee Insurance, that will represent a decrease of $16,555 from the previous year. A proposal from another insurance provider would not have covered vehicles if students were passengers.
-Authorized the addition of nine computer-assisted instruction courses at Hutchinson High School.
-Heard praise from the district’s auditor, Swindoll, Janzen, Hawk & Loyd, for the district's financial recordkeeping.
-Did not discuss the selection process for the district’s next superintendent, but advertisements of the job opening in July 2019 are expected to be posted next week.
