A timely tip may have averted tragedy at Wellsville High School.
According to a joint release from officials at USD 289, the Wellsville Police Department, and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department, the entities are cooperating to investigate a threat of violence against the school.
“On October 31, 2018 the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office received a tip, through Crime Stoppers, of a possible threat of violence at the Wellsville High School,” officials said. “The information received indicated a student, or students, has become engrossed with school shootings and has analyzed previous incidents. The information indicated a concern the student(s) may be planning such an event at the Wellsville High School. The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and the Wellsville Police Department coordinated with USD 289 to investigate the possible threat. The investigation is ongoing.”
There is no present danger to the community.
“At this time the situation is contained and all potentially involved parties have been contacted,” officials said. “There is no current threat to the school, students or staff.”
The organizations stressed their prioritization of community safety.
“Unified School District 289, Wellsville Police Department, and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office consider the safety and security of students, staff and the public to be paramount,” officials said. “We will continue to work together to ensure safety and security for all patrons and citizens.”
