HAYS — A nightmarish start doomed the Ottawa American Legion AAA baseball team Wednesday in its first game of the state tournament in Hays.
    The Hays Eagles scored six runs on three hits, including a home run in the first inning en route to a 14-0 run-rule victory over the Arrows. Ottawa plays 10 a.m. Thursday against Great Bend in its second pool game of the AAA/AA American Legion State Tournament. Ottawa concludes pool play around 12:15 p.m. Friday against Emporia.
    The Arrows were held to one, while Hays bats were on fire with 10 hits. Wayne Laurie ripped a single in the top of the fourth inning. The Arrows did hit a couple of other drives in the outfield alleys, but they were tracked down by the Hays outfielders.
    Hays sent 11 batters to the plate in the first inning and 12 in the seven-run third. Hays hit two solo home runs.
