East Central Kansas Economic Opportunity Corp. officials announced Monday the agency is temporarily providing services from its central office location on South Ash Street in Ottawa.

The move is the result of the Aug. 1 flood, which resulted in ECKAN losing records, office furniture, equipment and food after floodwater inundated the Franklin County Community Center at 517 E. Third St., which is located inside the Don Woodward Community Center. It was the second flood to affect the Don Woodward building this summer, officials said.

ECKAN will be temporarily providing services from its central office at 1320 S. Ash St. Hours are 8 a.m.-noon and 1-5 p.m. until the end of August. In September, those hours will change to 9 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m.

The ECKAN Community Center has Salvation Army flood kits and disaster funds for food, household items and other flood-related needs for individuals affected by the flood. Anyone needing assistance can call the center at 785-242-7515 to make an appointment to learn more.

Tuesday food distribution will resume at 9 a.m. Aug. 13 in the Don Woodward Community Center parking lot, while the Harvesters food distribution is also scheduled from 2-4 p.m. the first Wednesday of each month. The next food distribution date is Sept. 3, also in the Don Woodward Community Center parking lot.

School supply applicants who missed the Resource and Readiness Fair can pick up their shoe vouchers and backpacks at the ECKAN Community Center, 1320 S. Ash, by calling for an appointment. The United Way fill the Bus campaign, American Eagle and local donors provided

nearly 500 school backpacks. ECKAN distributed the remaining backpacks to school counselors at all Franklin County elementary, middle and secondary public schools.

“We are very grateful to the volunteers who helped the agency get through this post-flood week and for the generous outpouring of school supplies,” ECKAN CEO Crystal Anderson said.

ECKAN is also accepting monetary donations to assist local residents affected by the recent flood. Contributions will be accepted online through the agency’s website or at its central office location.
