Martin Earl Callaghan, 57, died Monday, July 3, 2017, on his farm near Versailles, Missouri. Marty was born on March 12, 1960, in Ottawa, Kansas, to William and Wilma (Keith) Callaghan. He attended school in Ottawa and moved to Versailles in the early ‘70s, graduating from Versailles High School in 1978. He was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Becky Hunter, on July 2, 1978.
Funeral services are planned for 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 10, at the Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home in Versailles. Graveside services and interment will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery near Versailles. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, at the funeral home.
In the early years of their marriage, Marty and Becky raised produce and sold at the Farmers’ Market in Kansas City. Marty was also working at Gates in Versailles at the time. The trucks used to transport plants also became utilized for delivering parts for Gates. A long-lasting hauling relationship developed, which expanded to eight semi-trucks, many employees and warehouse buildings that grew to total more than 100,000 square feet. He was very proud of the employment opportunities the warehouse provided in the Versailles community. He also continued to utilize his farm, working alongside his son, Jeremiah, hauling gravel locally and raising crops.
Marty was always busy — but his main focus in life was enjoying and loving his family and friends. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved hunting and fishing. He enjoyed Colorado elk hunting trips each fall with his son and sons-in-law. Collecting and restoring old Chevy trucks (especially ’67-’72) was a passion of his, and he had hoped to restore one for each of his grandkids’ first vehicle. More than anything else, he especially loved being Grandpa.
Marty is survived by his wife, Becky, of the home; children, Amanda Garrison and husband, Jeremy of Versailles, Jeremiah Callaghan of Versailles, Carolyn Handtke and husband, Jeremy of Linn Creek; adopted children, J’Marie Tindle of Arkansas, Michael Callaghan and wife Elise and family of Great Falls, Montana, Mahala Killeen and husband Eric of River Ridge, Louisiana; grandchildren, Lauren Garrison, Parker Garrison, Rylee Callaghan, Kodie Callaghan, Weston Handtke, Berklee Handtke and Xantha Killeen; his mother, Wilma Straub and husband Randy of Laurie; brothers, Pat Callaghan and wife Debbie, and Bill Callaghan and wife Susan, all of Ottawa; sister, Kathy Sangster and husband Sandy of Paris, Texas; several nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends.
