Irene Florence Heckman, 86, passed away Friday, April 27, 2018, at Baldwin Healthcare & Rehabilitation, Baldwin City, Kansas. She was born Feb. 28, 1932, in Lyndon, Kansas, the daughter of Benjamin H. Walburn and Addie A. (Hodges) Walburn.

Celebration of Life services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, May 19, 2018, at Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home, 325 S. Hickory St., Ottawa, KS. Inurnment will be held at a later date in Woodlawn Cemetery, Pomona, Kansas.

Irene graduated from Osage County Public School in 1946. She worked in the hardware business and could help you with just about any job, from plumbing projects to picking out seed for your garden. She did it all.

Irene was united in marriage to Roy R. Heckman on Jan. 15, 1949, in Ottawa, Kansas. They shared over 49 years of marriage until Roy’s passing on June 19, 1998.

She is also preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin and Addie; her husband, Roy; a daughter, Kathy A. Heckman; a son, Danny R. Heckman; and nine siblings, James, Vernon, Ben, Dean, Gerald, Orlan, Marion, Clifford, and Velma.

Irene is survived by a granddaughter, Sara Printy; and two great-grandsons, Parker Mason and Logan Mason.

Irene was called Grandma by many others from her neighborhood on Sycamore Street in Ottawa, Kansas. She was renowned for making fried chicken and baking the best pies! She kept a garden every year and did a lot of canning. She also enjoyed sewing and making crafts.
