On Sunday July 8, 2018, Nina Marie Lane passed away due to complications from heatstroke. She was 81 years old.
A graveside service is planned for 10 a.m. Aug. 11 at the Melvern Cemetery in Melvern, Kansas.
Nina was born April 9, 1937, in Ottawa, Kansas, to Howard and Rena Curtis. She moved to Ridgecrest, California, in 1974 when her husband, Robert, was stationed at China Lake Naval Weapons Center.
Nina retired in 2012 after more than 35 years of Civil Service, serving in various financial positions at China Lake. She was known for her strong work ethic, keen analytical mind, and willingness to help others.
Nina was a firm believer in higher education. She encouraged her daughters to further their education and led by example. While continuing to work full-time she earned her bachelor’s degree in Business Administration the same year that both her daughters received their degrees.
Nina loved to travel, she was an avid reader, and loved to go on backpacking adventures throughout the Sierra Nevada Mountains. When Nina was no longer able to backpack, she enjoyed long daily walks. Nina loved watching her seven grandchildren grow and mature. She also loved to spend time playing with and reading to her great-granddaughter, Harper Slatkovsky.
Nina is survived by daughters Barbara (Tim) Johnson, and Flora (Troy) Podratz, grandchildren Calvin, Emily (Jacob) Slatkovsky, Hannah, and Sam Johnson, Madeline Harris, Alexia and Brady Podratz, great-granddaughter Harper Slatkovsky, brother Howard Curtis, sisters-in-law Kay Hagen, Mary Elder, and Sandy Copley, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, parents, brothers Glen, Warren, and David, sisters Mabel, Nancy, and Mary Ruth.
A memorial service honoring Nina was held at the Ridgecrest United Methodist Church on July 14 in Ridgecrest, California.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the “B” Mountain Foundation for the Marie LeRoy scholarship which assists local graduating high school students further their educations.
