Elaine Ruth Roberts went to be with her Lord on Nov. 7, 2019, at age 91. She was born on Sept. 1, 1928, in Elk Creek, Nebraska, to Edwin J. and Nettie (Kovanda) Beethe. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Elk Creek. She attended St. Peter’s Lutheran School in grades 6-8 and graduated with the Elk Creek High School class of 1946. She taught in a one-room country school for two years after receiving her teaching certificate from Peru State Teachers College, Peru, Nebraska.
On June 4, 1950, she married Robert L. “Bob” Roberts of Tecumseh, Nebraska, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church and they celebrated 61 years of marriage before Bob’s death in 2012. They lived in Omaha until 1952 when Bob joined the Navy and shipped out from Naval Base San Diego. Elaine remained there while her husband performed medical duty on the USS Philippine Sea during the Korean War. In 1956 they went to Falls City, Nebraska, for Bob’s job at Dorr-Philpot and Reavis-Macomber Funeral Home.
In 1961, Bob and Elaine moved to Ottawa, Kansas, to help manage the Lamb Funeral Home, later purchasing the business. They adopted two children, Mary Lyn (1962) and John (1965), during the time that Elaine taught in the Ottawa School District as a substitute for five years. Elaine received her funeral directors license in 1967 to assist at Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home beside her husband.
She was a lifetime member of the Lutheran Church and since 1961 Faith Lutheran where she was a founding member of the church choir, organist for many years, Sunday School Teacher, Board of Parish Fellowship member, Bible Study participant, quilting, and Mid-week Table Parent. Elaine was a member of the Ransom Memorial Health Auxiliary for 55 years, receiving the Francis Swift Distinguished Service Award in 2012, Chapter GL PEO for 55 years, Franklin County Visitor Information Center volunteer, The Women’s Educational Society of Ottawa University and Master Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi sorority for 58 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob Roberts; son, John Roberts; son-in-law, Patrick Fehr; parents, Edwin and Nettie Beethe; brother, Ed Beethe and wife Dorothy.
Elaine is survived by her daughter, Mary Lyn Fehr, Ottawa, Kansas; daughter-in-law, Tara Roberts, Manhattan, Kansas; grandson, Dylan Roberts, Breckenridge, Colorado; granddaughter, Tessa Roberts, Denver, Colorado; sister, Eilene (Dean) Thiesfeld, Lincoln, Nebraska; brother-in-law, Les (Sue) Roberts, Lincoln, Nebraska; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2019, at Faith Lutheran Church, Ottawa, followed by burial in Highland Cemetery. A visitation will be from 6 p.m.-8 p.m. at the Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home on Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2019.
