Legacy Square to be located where the Flint Hill Trail and Prairie Spirit Trail intersect at First and Walnut Streets will be an outstanding community asset available to all.
One of the purposes of the square is to entice trail users to visit downtown. However, a complete positive experience for trail users on the Flint Hills Trail must include an attractive trail within the city limits. This would involve building a 10-foot-wide concrete path on the former railroad bed much like the one in Garnett along the Prairie Spirit Trail. Federal Transportation Alternatives funds, administered by Kansas Department of Transportation, are available for building such recreational trails.
In conclusion, Ottawa can become a destination place for trail users if it builds the Legacy Square and upgrades the Flint Hills Trail segment within the city.
