WELLSVILLE — The West Franklin High School girls basketball team has positive history to lean on in future years.

The Falcons played in their first sub-state championship game Saturday in Wellsville. Council Grove ended West Franklin’s late season run with a 49-26 win over the Falcons.

The Falcons went 9-3 over the final 12 games.

“It is something to strive for and something to aim at,” Falcons coach Kyle Conley said about setting goals of reaching the state tournament. “The kids started believing in what they were doing. The kids bought into the program. They bought into each other. They played for each other. Council Grove did not have a scare like that in a long time. They played with a lot of heart. It is a great group of kids.

“It sets the bar to where it needs to be now. The expectation is this is where we are going to be every year. We are going to roll and attack. Now, it is do damage in sub-state.”

West Franklin turned the season around after getting blasted by Council Grove in the first round of the Flint Hills League Shootout in mid-January.

The team had a heart-to-heart talk and decided to make changes.

“It is not going to be that way,” Conley said. “Adversity builds character, but it does not, it reveals it. They picked each other up. We kept building on it. It was all about heart. It would have been nice to get one more.

“It was a fun trip. It is a fun environment. It was awesome.”

The West Franklin fans filled most of its side of the gym and was loud throughout the game.

Conley said it was great to see the West Franklin patrons come together and give the girls a big boost with their support.

West Franklin used that energy to gain a 16-14 halftime lead. The second half was a different story.

The Falcons struggled offensively. West Franklin hit just two field goals in the second half.

“We ran out of gas,” Conley said. “We could not get a shot to fall. We gave them a scare for half. Everybody knows Council Grove is good.”

Macy Flory paced the Falcons (12-11) with 11 points.

Council Grove (49) — Auchard 11, Hula 7, Poole 7, Peterson 4, Brintle 10, Allan 6, Butler 4.

West Franklin (26) — Reed 4, Steele 2, Flory 11, Whittington 4, Shaffer 5.
