OU softball off to hot start

The Ottawa University softball team is off to a 5-1 start in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference games.

The Lady Braves swept Bethel Wednesday in Ottawa. The Lady Braves won 4-3 and 10-1.

Ottawa broke a scoreless tie with four runs on four hits in the fourth inning of the opener.

Lydia Budke’s RBI single gave Ottawa a 1-0 lead.

Catherine Wallace’s ground out scored Alyssa Miller.

The Lady Braves took a 3-0 lead when Budke scored on a wild pitch. Elsa Valenzuela’s single to center scored Gabby Markham.

Bethel scored two in the fifth inning and one in the sixth inning to make it close.

Miller and Budke led the Lady Braves with two hits apiece. Markham had seven strikeouts in seven innings of work to earn her seventh victory of the season.

Ottawa owned the nightcap. The Lady Braves scored four runs in the first inning. Miller, Budke, Wallace and Mikayla Oliphant scored the runs.

Bethel scored a run in the third inning to make it 4-1. Ottawa exploded for six runs in the bottom of the third inning.

Miller went 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored. Budke, Valenzuela, Darin Lewis, and Savannah Taylor all had two hits apiece.

Paige Williams pitched four innings to pick up her seventh victory of the year. Freshman Molli Morgan pitched the fifth.

The Lady Braves (15-14) play 1 p.m. Tuesday at home against Kansas Wesleyan.
