Cyclones' Ferguson rises to No. 2 in shot put

SHAWNEE — Ottawa High School senior Kord Ferguson has one more hurdle to climb in the shot put — Clint Johnson’s state record of 69 feet, 1.25 inches set in 1980.

Ferguson climbed to the No. 2 spot all-time in Kansas with a 67-10 performance Friday in the Jaguar Invitational at Shawnee Mission North High School.

Ferguson, who has the No. 4 performance in the discus, also won the discus to highlight Ottawa’s day.

The girls were led by Dariann Ingram’s runner-up finish in the high jump.

Ottawa competes Thursday at Anderson County.

CENTRAL HEIGHTS

Regan Markley, Emily Holloman and Brianna Erhart placed in multiple events Friday for the Central Heights girls track team in the Cass-Midway Invitational.

The Vikings finished third out of 15 teams. The boys were paced by their field events in taking sixth.

Markley won the discus and was second in the shot put. Holloman won the 100-meter race and was fourth in the 200.

Erhart was second in the 100 hurdles, fourth in the 300 hurdles and the high jump. Erhart, Markley and Holloman were members of the fourth-place 400 relay team.

Tanner Erhart won the boys shot put. Chance Schooler finished second in the discus. Tyler Hendron was third in the shot put and discus.

Central Heights competes today at Pleasanton.

WEST FRANKLIN

LYNDON — The West Franklin track teams had some solid performances Friday in the MdCV Invitational at Lyndon.

Senior Alexa Ryan set a school record in the 400. Josh Napper won the 100, 200 and long jump events for the second straight meet.

Alexis Yelland won the girls 3,200.

“Josh Napper continues to look impressive in his three open events and runs a great last leg on the 1,600 relay,” West Franklin coach Susan Zentz said. “First-year track members Alexis Yelland and Alexa Ryan are already having a huge impact on our team.”

The boys finished second with 73 points, while the girls were fourth with 48.5 points.

West Franklin competes Thursday at Northern Heights.
