BURLINGAME — The Central Heights High School baseball team is playing winning baseball.

The defense is making plays. The pitchers are dominating opposing hitters.

The Vikings’ hitters are producing from top to bottom. Those performances led the Vikings to an 11-0 start.

Central Heights’ latest wins were Friday over Burlingame, 15-4 and 7-1, in Burlingame.

All nine starters had at least one hit in the opener.

“We did a nice job of hitting line drives and hard groundballs in the chilly windy conditions,” Viking coach Jason Brown said.

Jordan Smith went four innings in the opener. He had six strikeouts and gave up four hits.

“He did a nice job of keeping them off balance by mixing up his pitches a lot,” Brown said. “He could of went the whole game, but we pulled him to save some pitches and get Tristan Davis some work. Tristan went one inning and gave up two runs. Tristan did exactly what we wanted him to do by throwing a lot of strikes with a big lead.”

The Vikings were a bit quiet in the nightcap with six hits, but stole 11 bases.

“We came out a little flat offensively in this game, but we did what we had to do to win,” Brown said.

Coby Robertson tossed 4 2/3 innings. He gave up three hits.

“He came in once again and did a good job of getting ahead in the count and making them earn their way on,” Brown said. “He fought and ended up getting the win for his team. Jordan Horstick threw 1 1/3 innings giving up no runs and had two strikeouts. Trae Clayton threw one inning and had two strikeouts.

“Our pitchers are what is giving us a chance every time out right now. The pitchers have confidence in their defense and that is why we are winning games right now.”
