Ottawa High School’s No. 1 doubles tandem of Vince Sylvester and Alex Reed are playing really consistent tennis.

The pair swept two tournament titles Wednesday and Thursday. The doubles team won the Leavenworth and Ottawa Quadrangular championships, winning all six matches.

“They played really well, especially against Paola,” Ottawa coach Eric Sparks said. “Vince and Alex are playing the best tennis they have all season.

“They are keeping the ball deep. They are being aggressive, attacking a lot more. The close matches they are coming out on top now.”

The pair defeated Atchison 11-9 in the third set at Leavenworth in the title match. The Cyclones lost to the same team in a tiebreaker earlier this season.

Jonathan Kuczmarski went 2-1 in both tourneys. He has a 11-7 season mark.

“Every opponent he has lost to has been a quality opponent,” Sparks said. “He is playing good tennis.”

Chris Espinosa went 1-2 in the tournaments and has an 8-10 mark in his first varsity season at No. 2 singles.

“He is really progressing,” Sparks said. “He is playing the best tennis of the season.”

Ottawa’s No. 2 doubles tandem of Luke Rea and Kley Bolivar split their six matches and has posted a 7-8 mark this season.

“They need to play more consistent,” Sparks said. “They need to start putting balls away at the net.”

Ottawa closes the regular season with two tourneys in De Soto. Ottawa plays today in the De Soto Invitational and Monday in a rescheduled Frontier League tourney.
