OU athletes honored for academics

Nine Ottawa University athletes from the spring sports were named 2013 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar athletes.

The softball honorees were: Amanda Martinsen, Morgan Beckler, Cady Blevins, Rebecca Dunlop, Darin Lewis and Taylor Heffern. Martinsen and Beckler are two-time honorees.

Jacob Loucks was the baseball team honoree.

Tyler Gude and Austin Coverdale are two-time honorees for the men’s track team.

Women’s track team members Chelsea Fullerton and Lauren Buckles were selected to the Capital One Academic All-District 6 first team.

Fullerton has twice qualified for the NAIA Cross-Country National Championships and the Track and Field Outdoor National Championships.

She finished 192 out of 320 runners with a time of 20 minutes, 12 second this past fall in the NAIA cross-country meet.

Fullerton broke the school record in the marathon at 3:26.03.60 to finish 32nd in the 2013 NAIA Track and Field Outdoor National Championships.

She also broke the school record in the half marathon at 1:30.31. Fullerton finished fifth in the 5,000-meter race at the 2013 Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships with a time of 19:26.12 to earn All-KCAC honors.

Buckles is a two-time All-KCAC selection in the javelin. Buckles earned All-KCAC honors this past season with a throw of 110 feet, 11.25 inches. She was selected for the Red Cross/NAIA Collegiate Leadership Program. She is a four-year letter winner on the Ottawa women’s basketball team.
