POMONA — The West Franklin High School girls cross-country runners can’t get over the fact that three points separated them from a state berth last year.

The Falcon girls return a good nucleus of runners from that team.

“You can tell it bugged them,” second-year West Franklin coach Tara Huggard said.

“The push is not coming from me it is coming from them. You can tell it lit a fire underneath them.”

The runners are running in a good pack.

“They are running the best pack running I have seen for a long time,” Huggard said.

The girls leaders are senior Alexis Yelland and junior Autumn Holloway, who is a returning state qualifier.

Yelland just missed going to the state meet by one or two places at the 3A regional.

“Autumn and Alexis push each other and encouraging everyone else has created this pack,” Huggard said.

Other returners include Abby Morrison and Charlie Fine.

One of the top newcomers is McKenzie Weien.

“She is going to surprise everybody,” Huggard said. She is competitive.”

The boys lost a lot of runners from last year’s league championship team.

The team returns one runner from that team.

Isaiah Messick is the lone returner.

“He is already running times better than he ended with last year,” Huggard said.

“He has improved immensely over the summer.”

Newcomer Brett Whittington gives them two runners.

“He just decided to come out,” Huggard said. “They are working well together. We are working personal records.”

Huggard said this group is a hard-working and expects it to pay off.

“They want to be here all the time,” she said. “They don’t want to quit.

“They work harder than I ever imagined. That has been fun.”
