EMPORIA — Each Ottawa High School girls tennis player won a match in its season opener at Emporia.

There were six teams in the Emporia tournament field.

Hannah Hedges went 1-3 and Ashlyn Rundel was 1-2 in singles.

Ottawa’s doubles teams of Katie Webber/Kelsie Ferguson and Courtney Houston/Brianna Pfizenmaier also went 1-2.

“They had a lot of nerves going in,” Ottawa first-year coach Eric Sparks said. “For the first meet, it went really well.”

Sparks said many of the girls did not play with much pace and will work on hitting balls harder and with more precision.

“They all got a win,” he said. “We were the only 4A school there.”

He said all the girls competed well with some of the sets being close. Rundel won in a tiebreaker.

Ottawa plays 9:30 a.m. today at Seaman.
