BURLINGTON — The West Franklin High School cross-country teams had four runners medal Thursday in the season opener at the Burlington Wildcat Classic.

Alexis Yelland led the Falcons with a sixth-place finish in the girls race. Abby Morrison took 17th.

The girls finished third overall.

Both Falcon boys medaled. Isaiah Messick took 16th and Brett Whittington was 20th.

“Impressed with both my boys for medaling,” West Franklin coach Tara Huggard said. “Isaiah ran his PR by almost a minute and this was Brett’s first ever cross-country race.

“Alexis ran an amazing first race and I can’t wait to see where she is able to go this season. Abby also did a great job of stepping it up and finishing well.”

West Franklin was not at full strength as few runners could not compete because of illness.

“We had several suffering with sickness and two top runners out because of illness, so I am very pleased with the way we did overall and can’t wait to see how they do as a team once everyone is healthy,” Huggard said.

West Franklin runs 11 a.m. Sept. 14 in the Wamego Invitational.
