Cyclone volleyball takes sixth

The Ottawa High School volleyball team finished sixth Saturday in the 12-team Ottawa Invitational.

Ottawa posted a 2-3 record. Ottawa won its first two matches and dropped the final three.

The Ottawa High School volleyball team finished sixth Saturday in the 12-team Ottawa Invitational.

Ottawa posted a 2-3 record. Ottawa won its first two matches and dropped the final three.

Ottawa defeated Emporia (25-8 21-25 25-11) and Topeka West (25-14 25-12). Ottawa lost to McPherson (25-11, 25-17) to finish out pool play. McPherson is ranked No. 1 in 4A Division I.

Ottawa was in the championship bracket as the sixth seed. Ottawa fell to Blue Valley West, the eventual tourney champs, 25-14, 25-12. Ottawa lost to Olathe Northwest 25-15, 25-14, in the fifth-place match.

“We came out strong in our first two matches against Emporia and Topeka West,” Ottawa coach Laura Jeannin. “Throughout the day, we faced some tough competition. We want to keep getting better every match we play so that we are at our best in the postseason.”

Corie Fischer paced Ottawa with 25 kills. Abigail Fangman had 50 assists.
