COUNCIL GROVE — West Franklin and Mission Valley have shared the Flint Hills League volleyball championship for the past three seasons.

Mission Valley made sure it happened for a third time by defeating West Franklin in the league tourney championship match (23-25, 25-21, 25-18) Saturday in Council Grove.

“It ended the way it was suppose to,” West Franklin coach Angie Corwine said. “Our four seniors have battled Mission Valley’s seniors for the league championship regular-season title and tournament title since junior high. Two years ago, we were co-league champs with them and they won the tournament.

“Last year, they won the regular-season league title and we won the tournament. This year, we were the regular-season champs and they won the tournament. It has been a respectful rivalry over the years.”

West Franklin went 4-1 in the tourney, including winning all three pool matches. West Franklin defeated Osage City (25-10, 25-10), Northern Heights 25-10, 25-23) and Lyndon (25-7, 25-22) in pool play.

West Franklin needed three sets to down Council Grove (23-25, 27-25, 25-13) in the semifinals.

“Overall, we had a good day,” Corwine said. “We took care of business in pool play, but in bracket play we were not as sharp. It took two miraculous saves by Emily Reed, Bailey Whittington and Kati Aitchison and a solo stuff block by Macy Flory at the end of the second set to beat Council Grove in the semifinal match.

“So I like the way girls responded when their backs were against the wall.  In the final match, we won the first set and we were tied 20-20. We had the momentum at that point, but we made four errors in a row that sealed our fate. In the third set, we just couldn’t recover mentally.”

West Franklin (28-5) plays tonight at home. It will be senior night.
