WELLSVILLE — The Wellsville High School wrestling team made big gains in numbers and experience during the off season.

“Our team worked hard during the off season this year,” Wellsville coach Andy Wright said. “We went to few camps and wrestled at least an extra 30-40 matches during the spring and summer. We made some huge gains and experience some success last year.”

Wellsville has more than 20 wrestlers on the squad for the 2013-14 season, plus returns all their varsity wrestlers from a year ago. The leaders are the four state tourney qualifiers: senior Deagan Asebedo and sophomores Tayler Wilmarth, Dylan Leckner and JT Thomas.

Asebedo led the Eagles in takedowns, escapes and falls last year.

Senior Drake Williams and Michael Kunard return. Williams was 22-19 and one match away from state last year.

Wright said he has high expections.

Senior Tim Williams is in his second year of wrestling.

“Coming in this year with experience, he should have more success,” Wright said.

Juniors Colten Cisneros and Dillon Ware both had winning records last year, but because of  injuries they couldn’t finish the season.

“If healthy, they both could be a major asset to our program this year,” Wright said.

The sophomore class gives Wellsville depth. Wright said Dalton Good, Gage Leckner, Garrett Cunningham, Nathan Cunningham, David Williams, Bryce Smith all wrestled junior varsity and varsity matches last year and will help contribute to our team success this year.

There are seven freshmen on the squad. Reece Williams has the most experience.
