The Central Heights High School boys and girls opened the Ike Cearfoss Tournament Monday with victories over Kansas City Christian at Central Heights.

Both teams play Independence today in the semifinals.

The boys won 66-43, while the girls carved out a 42-18 win.

“Tonight’s game was a little better than Friday’s game,” Central Heights boys coach Rusty Cannady said. “We came out the aggressor on ‘D’ and executed a little better offensively. Jordan [Horstick] and Tanner [Erhart] really exerted themselves offensively tonight.”

Central Heights 27-7 after the first quarter and 48-21 at halftime.

“Our defense gave us some easy scoring chances and we battled a little better on the boards,” Cannady said. “We were tougher tonight than we were Friday. All-in-all, I was extremely pleased with our effort.”

Horstick led the Vikings (1-1) with 23 points. Erhart finished with 22.

The girls squad held KC Christian to six points in the second half.

“Defensively we were solid and I look for us to keep getting better,” Central Heights girls coach Scott Lane said.

Central Heights became better on offense in the second half.

“In the first half, we were not patient offensively and we forced shots,” Lane said. “Once we settled down and got the ball on at least three sides a possession, we got a lot better shots and wore them down on defense.”

Central Heights led 18-12 at halftime.

Sydney Meyer led the Vikings (2-0) with 13 points. Kenzie Hayward had nine.
