Braves athletics set a new mark for off-the-field work.
The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) recently announced the 1,677 Scholar-Teams for the 2016-17 academic year. Ottawa University had 17 of 23 athletic programs named National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Scholar-Teams for the 2016-17 academic year, the most ever in Braves program history, according to a news release.
For a team to be considered for the NAIA Scholar-Team award, it must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) as defined by the institution. The team grade point average includes all eligible varsity student-athletes.
Women’s indoor track and field led the Braves with a team GPA of 3.72.
The OU women’s basketball team made the list for the 10th straight year, finishing with a team GPA of 3.39.
“Earning NAIA Scholar-Team for a 10th straight year is such an accomplishment for our program and players,” Bruce Tate, OU head women’s basketball coach, said in the release. “The season basically demands the entire academic year, so give credit to our players that have the ability to balance basketball and academics. We’ve made academics one of the top five priorities in our program, and continue to challenge each team to not be the group that breaks the streak. It has been an honor to see our team achieve such a standard year after year.”
Women’s lacrosse (3.48) earned NAIA Scholar-Team honors for the first time. Brave baseball (3.03) earned the honor for the fourth time, its first since 2014-15. Men’s basketball (3.07) was named to the list for the third straight year, sixth overall. For the sixth time, the men’s golf team earned the honor with a team GPA of 3.45. For the third time, the men’s indoor (3.01) and outdoor (3.12) track and field team were both named NAIA Scholar-Teams. The women’s indoor (3.72) and outdoor (3.23) track and field team earned the honor for the fifth straight year.
The OU men’s soccer (3.12) team earned the honor for the second time, its first time since 2014-15. For the third time and its first since 2014-15, the men’s tennis team was named a NAIA Scholar-Team (3.31). The Braves softball (3.01) and women’s golf (3.05) teams earned the honor for the seventh straight season. Women’s cross country (3.63), soccer (3.32), and volleyball (3.37) were named an NAIA Scholar-Team for the eighth straight year. The OU women’s tennis (3.29) team has never been left off the list, being named to the Scholar-Team since the program’s inception in 2012-13.
