Ottawa’s road to a third straight state championship started off with a big bump.

The Arrows (32-8) dropped their opening round game of the American Legion AAA State Tournament to Hays Wednesday night 7-4. Ottawa now must win out in the loser’s bracket in order to reach the title game. They play in Thursday’s second game set to start at roughly 3 p.m. against Ark City at Orlis Cox Sports Complex, 901 W. Second St., Ottawa. Rain overnight pushed back starting times for Thursday's games.

Ottawa built a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning against Hays, and looked to be in control before the Hays offense erupted for five runs in the top of the fourth.

The Arrows loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame, but that was as close as they got to scoring for the remainder of the game.

Trevor Boehm, catcher, and Donovan Sutti, third baseman, each had RBI’s in the first inning. Owen Lamar, second baseman, ripped a two-out, two-RBI double in the bottom of the third. Lamar left the game in the top of the sixth with an apparent left leg injury.
