KANSAS CITY, Kansas — The Cyclone boys had six top-20 finishers en route to a first-place finish at the Turner Invitational Wednesday.

It was a strong showing for the Ottawa High School cross country team in its first full meet of the season. Chris Kornhaus, OHS head cross country coach, noted his team showed improvement despite the hot weather.

“Turner is a very challenging course, and it was hot,” he said. “We saw several of the guys go ahead, and improve their times.

“One through five, we only had a 34-second gap, and it was different people from last week. It was the same core, but we had some guys switch places, which is what cross country is supposed to be about. There’s seven people out there and we know only five can score, but any given day, it is next man up. That is what they did up in Turner.”

Cyclone runners will be back in action Sept. 23 when Ottawa hosts its home meet at the Eisenhower Road course.

“My message to them this week is, ‘Well, is that good enough? Or are we going to keep getting better.,’” Kornhaus said. “The truth is, even though we are doing well as a team versus other people, those times are not going to cut it come October. We have to continue with the thought that we’ve got to continue getting better.”
