While a good Iola team swept both varsity races Thursday, area runners continued to build on success at Central Heights Thursday.

Building up for the postseason will be key. Regional assignments were released Thursday by the Kansas State High School Activities Association, and all three area teams — Central Heights, West Franklin and Wellsville — will be back at the Central Heights course, 3521 Ellis Road, Richmond, starting 10 a.m. Oct. 21 for the regional race. The top three teams, and top 10 individuals advance to state. The regional meet is set to also include Northeast Arma, Caney Valley, Southeast, Council Grove, Erie, Mission Valley, Eureka, Fredonia, Humboldt, Jayhawk-Linn, Neodesha and Osage City.

Thursday’s meet was a good measuring stick for how teams will stack up in October, Tara Huggard, West Franklin head cross county coach, said.

Dallin Bailey and Ryan Haner were first and second, respectively, for the Falcons in the boys varsity 5K. Bailey, fresh off a fifth place finish at Rim Rock Saturday, won at Central Heights with a 17:39 time. Haner’s time was 17:55, more than a minute faster than his Rim Rock time.

“Our third place finish today was a little disappointing because it does leave room for someone to sneak in at regionals and take the team spot from us,” Huggard said. “But hopefully we can turn that disappointment into motivation for the rest of the season.”

In his second season running prep cross country, Central Heights sophomore Tyler Stevenson continues to impress. He was third in the varsity race with a time of 18:01, helping propel his team to a second-place finish. Teammate Kyle Cardin earned a top-10 finish, placing seventh with a time of 18:19.

“Tyler Stevenson has made some great improvements in his sophomore year and is showing he is one of the best runners in our league right now,” Troy Prosser, Central Heights head cross country coach, said. “With many of my runners are starting to work their way back from injuries, it is finally translating into positive results on the course.”

Wellsville’s Jacob Whiteley and Dylan Sebol finished within two seconds of one another, each earning medals. Whiteley was 17th with a time of 19:33.4, and Sebol was 19th with a time of 19:34.6, both improvements from last week’s humid race at Rim Rock

In the girls varsity race, Paige McDaniel continued her monster year for Wellsville. She placed second with a time of 20:58.5.

Not far behind was West Franklin’s Molly Rossman, who finished fourth with a time of 21:15. Bailey Leach was ninth with a time of 22:28.

All three area squads finish up their final meet before league and subsequently regionals Thursday. West Franklin and Wellsville both compete at the Osage City Invitational. Central Heights is set to run at Pleasanton.
