Two home matches mark two wins for Braves wrestling.
The Ottawa University men’s wrestling team is 2-0 to start the season after beating Central Christian College 42-11 Wednesday at Wilson Field House in Ottawa.
The Braves had four non-forfeit wins in individual matches, including a lot of success in the heavier weights. Micah Miller, freshman, beat HP Krussick by pin in 30 seconds in the 165 weight division. Ryan Barclay, freshman, pinned Mason McCarty with 14 seconds left in the match in the 184 weight division. Glenn Clark, freshman, pinned Reggie Thomas 40 seconds into the 197 weight division. Chance Schooler, junior, capped off the final match by pinning Josh Snook in under a minute in the 285 weight division.
Miller and Schooler were both in the NAIA Men’s Wrestling Top 20 Individual Rankings as of Wednesday. Miller is ranked No. 14 in the 165 weight division, and Schooler, who is currently 6-0 on the season, is ranked No. 12 in the 285 weight division.
“He wants to go to nationals and he wants to be an All-American, and he’s got the ability to do that,” Kevin Andres, OU head men’s wrestling coach, said of Schooler. “He’s a junior college transfer that was one match away from placing at JUCOs last year. He has good basic skills that we are looking for, and he is working hard for us. I think he’ll tell you he’s learning a lot, and I think that is showing on the mat. He’s intense, and I like that.”
Ottawa is set to compete at the Southwest Open today in Richland, Texas. The Braves then have three road trips into December before coming back after winter break to host the Ottawa Duals Jan. 7.
“Being a young team like we are — we are predominately a freshmen-laden team — we are doing very well,” Andres said. “As I told them, we are making small little steps of improvement on a regular basis, and we need to continue to make those steps.”
