CARBONDALE — A good comeback effort wasn’t enough for the Falcons to pull off a win Monday. Metro Academy downed the West Franklin High School boys basketball team 75-64 in the opening round of the Ike Cearfoss Tournament at Santa Fe Trail High School.

West Franklin plays 7:30 p.m. today against Osage City at Santa Fe Trail, which lost 61-48 to the host team in the opening round.

The Falcons got down early against Metro, who had a dangerous combination of speed and good shooting, Micah Tempel, WFHS head boys basketball coach, said.

“They came out and made a ton of threes on us,” he said. “We didn’t do a very good job of adjusting until halftime.”

Metro’s lead was cut to six in the fourth quarter, but that was as close as it would get. West Franklin trailed by as many as 20 early in the game.

“The guys battled tremendously, but it is tough to come back against a team like that,” Tempel said.

The Falcons were led by Hunter Lewis, who put up 30 points. Riley Milliken scored 11 points, and Tanner Sink had 10.

Metro Academy (75) — Desousca 14, M. Spaedy 2, Ream 3, Paul 22, C. Spaedy 10, Frisbie 24.

West Franklin (64) — Lewis 30, Milliken 11, Sink 10, Seyler 9, Noyons 2, Gilkey 2.
