BASEHOR — Ottawa did all it could to contain a high-powered team, but came up short.
The Lady Cyclones basketball team fell 52-23 to Benton (St. Joseph, Missouri) Wednesday in the first round of the Bobcat Invitational hosted at Basehor-Linwood High School, 2108 155th St., Basehor.
Ottawa High School faced an uphill challenge facing the undefeated top team in Missouri Class 4, but fought hard in the third quarter. Benton had a 28-9 lead at halftime, but OHS cut it to 32-17.
That was as close as the game got with the Lady Cardinals going on a 20-0 run to take the commanding lead.
Ottawa’s Kamryn Shaffer, senior, led her team with 10 points. Benton’s Mia Henderson led all scorers with 12 points.
The Cyclones play 3 p.m. today at Basehor-Linwood HS in the second round of the tournament against the loser of Wednesday’s late game between Blue Valley and Basehor-Linwood.
