The Ottawa women play their final regular season home game today, hosting Southwestern College.

While the Ottawa University women’s basketball team (9-16, 7-12 Kanas Collegaite Athletic Conference) has struggled to get wins this season, the team has won some big games as of recent. The Lady Braves have won three of their last four games, including a close game Wednesday at Bethel College.

Southwestern has had similar turmoils this season, losing a number of close games. The team has lost its last two, including a 68-50 drubbing by the University of Saint Mary Wednesday in Leavenworth. The Lady Moundbuilders won the first matchup between the two teams, Jan. 3 in Winfield 58-53.

Tip-off time is set for 3 p.m. at OU’s Wilson Field House.

Ottawa 40, Bethel 37

NORTH NEWTON — Ottawa overcame a horrendous shooting day to knock off Bethel College on the road Wednesday.

The Lady Braves fell behind 26-17 midway through the third quarter in part to scoriing just 13 points in the first 20 minutes of play. Ottawa shot 5-30 from the field in the first half, including 0-15 in the second quarter where it scored just one point.

The OU offense found life from that point, going on a 13-0 tear that put them up 30-26 with 7:10 left in the final period.

Bethel got within one point after a Jade Brown basket with 17 seconds left made it 38-37 Braves. Forced to foul, the Lady Threshers sent Katlyn Hughes, sophomore guard, to the line where she subsequently hit 2-2 free throws.

Bethel had three offensive rebounds in the final 14 seconds, but couldn’t get a shot to fall.

Ottawa finished 14-54 shooting (25.9 percent) compared to Bethel’s 14-45 (31.1 percent). The Lady Threshers went just 1-15 from three-point range.

The Lady Braves were outrebounded 49-23, but dominated the turnover battle 33-18.

Leslie Speer, senior forward, led OU with 10 points.
